Iconic fashion pieces – build to last or to fade fast? – Dior double pearl earrings

The Dior double pearl earrings are around since quite some time. To be exact they date back to Dior’s pre fall 2013 collection.

They were featured in the Inez and Vinoodh lensed campaign video “Secret Garden 2 – Versailles” and somehow went viral with editors, stylists, celebrities and almost everyone afterwards. Very soon the Dior stores all around the world announced waiting lists for the Dior double pearl earrings.

Perfectly in time for the cruise 2014 Dior launched the new version of its double pearl earring, the so called “Gum Tee Shirt”, a colorful take on the double pearl shape with a rubber finish.

And why stop here? Next launch the “Dior Tee Shirt”, a double pearl earring with a metallic finish.

What will be next? Will the double pearl earring become an icon or fade away? Fact is that the series is very likely to discontinue! Camille Miceli, Dior’s costume jewelry designer since 2009 and the creative force behind the double pearl design, has left Dior this January to work for Louis Vuitton. Neither the material of the earrings (usually just lacquered resin fixated to a metal, which is not further classified) nor the craftsmanship behind it is outstanding (the internet is full of DIY tutorials!). Their oversized design tends to make square and round shaped faces look a little dys-propotional, while working well with oblong and heart shaped faces.

However, the design of a “double stud”, which looks as beautiful from the back as it does from the front is unique in my opinion. (I never bought a stud due to the ugly back fixation and always chose hoops or chandeliers instead.)

While I personally think that the Dior double pearl earring in its present form won’t become an icon I think that the unique design already provided inspiration for a huge amount of companies. In that way Camille Miceli’s take on the stud might have started to revolutionize the earring design!!!!

What I don’t like about the double pearl studs is how it is worn. It would make more sense to put the big pearl in the front, but everyone wears the big pearl in the back. It bends the lobe, and makes the ear look disfigured.
