Chanel art gallery, Prada and Céline street art …

According to Karl Lagerfeld “Fashion isn’t art.” But Fashion meets art – Art meets fashion has been the topic of fashion brand artist collaborations since quite some time. (Just think back to Marc Jacobs highly praised first collaboration with American graphiti artist Stephen Sprouse on the 2001 Louis Vuitton collection!). For spring 2014 a heavy art influence is present among so many collections. It is echoed in bold colors, artistic prints, graffiti elements and more.

The Chanel art gallery, which was set up in the Grand Palais as a backdrop for the spring 2014 pret-a-porter was incredible. Karl Lagerfeld himself supervised the creation of contemporary artworks, which played ironically with Chanel icons like pearls or double C. But not only the Chanel art gallery was cool, the runway looks were incredible. There was the much hyped art school backpack with its graffiti print, the oversized pearl necklaces resembling headphones, androgynous blazers and of course the fabulous brush-stroke dresses.

The set decoration was so incredible that Chanel recently launched an exhibition catalog, entitled “Chanel art…” (28 EURO, colette.fr). I definitely have to get my hands on it when I am at Colette next time!

Another outstanding show was Prada. Giant murals, which were echoed in dresses, coats and handbags were the key element of the set decoration. The coats were seen very frequently among fashion show attendees during the February 2014 fashion month but might be a little bold for everyday (… of course it depends on what you do everyday – I mean an average persons everyday …). However, the painted handbags with their super feminine shape are a great statement and easy to incorporate into almost every woman’s closet.

Another great show with a similar theme was Phoebe Philo’s spring 2014 Céline show. Particularly the asymmetrically hemmed skirts looked incredible. Those skirts are great for summer with just a little top. But they also work for colder days worn above black skinny jeans with a black oversized cashmere pullover and a biker jacket they make a super chic look!
