Buy the style of Kate Moss?! – Kate Moss x Topshop issue N15

Kate Moss designed a total of 14!!!! collections for Topshop between 2007 and 2010. All inspired by her own wardrobe. So Kate Moss x Topshop is actually old news, as is the concept of a “style icon” high street collaboration, just think of the recent Inès de la Fressange X Uniqlo. Deep inside buyers hope to transform into some kind of Kate Moss when wearing a piece from her collection. Does this concept really work or is the obvious comparison with Kate a too high goal?

Of course top models, actors, editors, bloggers … provide us with great style inspiration on a daily base. Its great to get inspired by those people. They or at least their stylist usually know what they are doing. But its important to combine a view inspirations mix them with some knowledge on trends and afterwards transform them into a look that flatters your very own shape, skin and hair color. Thats what style is all about!

“Buying into the wardrobe”, which is the aim of the style icon high street collaborations, is something a little different. You buy a piece that looks incredibly close to something your “style icon” once wore and hope to look similar. Its all about copying a persons style and running the risk to look like a cheap imitation!

That said I have to admit that I adore Kate Moss. That’s why I couldn’t help but watched the live streaming of the collection launch yesterday evening. Kate looked incredible on stage with her black pinstripe pantsuit (of course its definitely a little inspired by Hedi Slimanes Saint Laurent pieces). And as I saw the sold out pieces on net-a-porter.com today I thought hopefully do all the happy new owners recognize that there is a little challenge inside the collection. You buy something from Kate’s wardrobe and have to find your very very own way to look stylish with it (It has to look totally different from Kate – otherwise you lost the contest and payed money for it!) Below is my take on the contest….

Kates look is stunning – the pantsuit with the black camisole and the patent Loubi’s – very elegant and super sexy.

I personally love the tux with the golden pinstripes but for me (as I rarely wear sparkling details on my clothes) I would definitely have to dress it down with a simple T-shirt. Furthermore, in contrast to Kate I have a terribly oblong face – thats why I would prefer the crew neckline over her scoop neckline. Depending on the occasion I would either wear it with a pair of brogues or some simple heels (preferably my Manolo Blahnik BB suede in black) and I would definitely push back the sleeves a little (I always do that!). – However, sad to say but I would always be afraid to wear this look. I would fear someone saying “…isn’t this the pantsuit Kate Moss wore for the launch of her recent Kate Moss x Topshop collection. She looked stunning in it, didn’t she!”

Whats your opinion? Do you like to buy into Kate Moss wardrobe or do you feel this sets the goal too high and similar to me you would fear the direct comparison with her?
