Last Wednesday we just returned from our short trip to Venice Italy. I had visited the city a few times before but never stayed in a city hotel before. Once my visit was a one day stop during a Mediterranean cruise and the other two times I stayed at the Lido. This time we had booked the Centurion Palace hotel in Dorsoduro.
Centurion Palace – location
The Centurion Palace hotel is a canal side palazzo in the Sestiere Dorsoduro. Getting from the airport to the hotel and back is quiet easy. First option is to book the private water taxi via the hotel concierge. The taxi brings you directly from Marco Polo airport to the hotel pier. Another option is the Alilaguna boat, which brings you to a nearby pier. As we are not too much into water travel, I easily get sea sick after a short time, and were a little intimidated by the price we chose the least romantic transfer and used the ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma (20min) and walked the rest (20 min).
Dorsoduro is a fabulous sestiere. Its also the place where most of the scenes from “Indina Jones and the last crusade” were shot. You have the church of Santa Maria della Salute next door (Harrison Ford arrived at the “Salute” Pier in the Indiana Jones movie). A view steps away is Punta della Dogana, which houses the second part of the fab Pinault art collection. You have the sunny waterfront promenade of the Zattere with its huge amount of cafes and restaurants. There is Campo San Barnaba (Harrison Ford came out of the gully in the Indiana Jones movie on this square) and Campo Santa Margherita for a Spritz in the evening. For all art lovers the Peggy Guggenheim collection is very close as is the Galleria dell’Academia.
Centurion Palace – interior
The hotel interior is very modern. The rooms are spacious. An inner courtyard terrace as well as a canal side terrace offer fantastic options for caffe or a drink. For breakfast you can choose between a red and a white dinning room.
Centurion Palace – service
The service in the hotel is perfect. They offer a free shuttle to Piazza San Marco in the evening for hotel guests. The concierge is super friendly and offers help with city maps as well as the arrangement of trips to Murano.
As I consider the price range as absolutely OK for Venice I highly recommend this hotel to everyone, who plans a trip to the city.
Do you have any experience with hotels in Venice? Which one do you recommend?
