Chanel Jerrycan purse from the resort 2015 Dubai – bad taste vs. cool irony?

Guess that everyone with a basic interest in fashion has already seen it somewhere – the Chanel Jerrycan purse from the resort 2015 Dubai show. I saw two alterations on the runway – A bigger made in quilted leather and a smaller worn cross-body in plexi glass. From an aesthetic point of view I could connect with the plexi glass Chanel Jerrycan bag but felt severely distracted by the quilted leather style. But the gas can shape isn’t something new from Chanel. I have seen it before…

… it was part of the fall 2014 supermarket deco at the Grand Palais! The “Coco Carbone” tank  seemed to be a favorite of Rhianna, who was photographed with it an estimated 100 times. Rhianna is one of the biggest style icons at the moment and going to receive the CFDA fashion icon award later this year. I don’t think that this was just a random coincidence!

Besides this carefully planned Rhianna – promotion of the Dubai theme and the upcoming Chanel Jerrycan bag I see a general tendency in fashion towards a utility theme. Anya Hindmarch had a crush on Kelloggs, Jeremy Scott reinterpreted McDonalds for Moschino …for fall 2014. There might be a certain sense of irony behind the approach of doing cheap every day pieces in high end material. On the one hand this irony might be dedicated towards fast fashion, who does exactly the opposite – copy an expensive shape and do it in cheap material. But on the other hand it might also be dedicated towards the general trend into comfort wear (flat shoes, backpacks …).

What do you think – Do you like the purse? Would you buy something like that if the price wouldn’t matter to you? Do you also feel a certain irony behind pieces like that?
