Coat shopping guide fall 2014

I know I know almost everywhere the new fall trends are discusses. Style.com shows the top 10 trends with some accompanying must have items for every trend! Harpers Bazaar unveils a list of falls best jackets and bags. I love these trend reports, however somehow have to admit that they rarely help me to structure my shopping. I personally try to do a major wardrobe editing biannually – one in late August at the end of summer holidays and the other one usually starts after returning from the Christmas and New Year holidays and lasts until end of February. While doing this I developed a habit of making wardrobe item centered shopping lists for the upcoming season. These include what to keep in mind while searching for a classic or a trendy pieces. Here is my first little list – Coat shopping guide fall 2014!

With this list on hand I usually like to shop at a department store concept store or any other multi brand place. But of course over the years I also found brands, which are really worth to visit a mono brand store in search for a particular piece. When it comes to coats my 3 top brands for classic coats are: 1.) MaxMara (… you’ll never regret it!), 2.) Akris (…super pricy but the double face pieces are worth it!) & 3.) Chanel classics collections. For trendy coats I can only say Zara, Zara, Zara … it’s the best thing to try a coat trend, without investing an awful lot of money!

Love this summary too! Depending on the personal taste I also feel that classic patterns like Prince of Wales check or herringbone are great for a timeless coat. I also feel that the structure of the lapel is a prerequisite for a classic coat – best is shawl collar, because the width and angles within a lapel are hugely depending on the current trend!

Feel that this a really good approach to summarize the fall trends! Two more prerequsites for a classy coat for me – no shoulder support (shoulder padding), unlined in a way that the interior is as nice as the outside (no inner seam!)! Best brands to find that: Loro Piana & Akris

I love classic MaxMara wrap coats. Bought mine over 10 years ago and still wear it year round! I personally don’ t go for trendy coats as they are too much of an investment for me. I try to incorporate trend colors and patterns with the help of a scarf or some gloves!

Really timeless coat shouldn’t be black in my opinion best colors are beige & grey in my opinion! Winter is dark enough and everyone is dresses in so dark colors that I always love nothing more than a white pants and a light neutral coat!

… for me black, navy, emerald, burgundy and all dark colors are the best for a classy coat! They work for day and evening! Are more durable and need less frequent dry cleaning!

love the coat shopping list a lot! As they are a huge investment I stay classy when it comes to coats! Fast fashion EUR 100 coat purchases at zara each season are not an option for me! Prefer to add a touch of trend with some less expensive accessories like scarf brooch or belt!

I feel that the last time I bought a fall coat is 4-5 years ago. I personally go for classic instead of trendy coats. For this season my splurge is already planned – oversized fur lined Acne biker jacket! Not a total classic but very likely to stay a long time in my wardrobe!

Versatile list! I agree with the rest that coats are a little too expensive to go for ultra trendy pieces. But I usually search very carefully for one great basic each and try to buy it during end of season sale. During the last two years my decision has been Chanel! I don’t really have a master plan for this year but already spotted a fab black coat at Chanel – Let’s see!

Nice summary! I also love classy coats in dark colors. But I haven’t been coat shopping for a while because my black Rick Owens coat was a real investment and I am still so happy with it that I don’t feel any need to buy a new one soon. But I guess a 60ies print scarf is going to land on my fall shopping list!
