Skinny jeans for 2014 …?!

Let’s continue with some inspirations for your upcoming fall wardrobe! Very recently style.com announced that the skinny jeans is likely to be on its way out. Following the street style coverage of the current fashion month I really feel its true – there are less skinnies than ever and even loyal skinny devotees like French Vogue editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt started to favor classic straight cuts. Are pants really the wardrobe department that is likely to required the biggest makeover very soon!

On the one hand people, who get snapped in streetstyle are usually associated with the fashion industry and get directly inspired by the runway for their sartorial choices. Some or maybe even many are official or inofficial ambassadors of a brand. They are ahead of the mass! On the other hand the taste of the “mass” is shaped by what they see on the retail floor. The major forces behind this “mainstream” are the head buyers of major department and concept stores. Besides knowing that the “mass” needs time to adjust to fashion changes their decisions are mainly based on the following 3 aspects: 1.) works for many different shapes, 2.) in many different ways and 3.) for as many occasions as possible. Depending on these aspects many “runway” and “street style” trends descend slowly or sometimes never down into “normal life”. So what did head buyers think regarding pant shapes this fall? Mytheresa’s Justin O’Shea still sets on skinnies! The online retailers denim department consists of: 228 skinnies, 63 boyfriend, 35 straight and 7 flared. And net-a-porter.com’s? – 89 skinnies, 35 boyfriend15 flared and only 9 straight. So retailers expect fall 2014 still to be about the skinny shape but start to offer options for all those, who are tired of the good old omnipresent skinny shape.

Although skinnies surely haven’t departed for fall 2014 their departure has begun. What about staying with them even when the trend has moved away? I recently read an interesting article in Porter magazine, which dealed with the issue of “decade dressers”. Alexa Chung is a 60ies girl, Sofia Copolla a 90ies minimalist and Kate Moss a 70ies hippy deluxe – no one ever looks outdated. How is this possible? Well all of them are very aware of what they are doing. Every period has its icons, which turn into timeless classics and surely every period has its pitfalls. I guess no one would call a man, who stayed with his 80ies mullet haircut until today an incredible decade dresser. So the trick behind “decade dressing” is filtering out the decade’s  icons and mixing them with the right twist and spirit of present days.

Will the skinny shape make it and become an icon of our time or will it turn into that kind of style our grandchildren will start laughing at when they see the pictures? From a very personal point of view I like them slightly slouchy and a little wider at the ankle – more like a tight fitting straight – best purchase TopShop Baxter black. I already have my 4th because I live in them 24/7!!! I always feel well dressed with them and can’t image to stop wearing them any time soon or ever regret to have worn them. On the other hand the super tight high elastane, low waists with an extremely narrow leg opening especially worn with trainers and short tops are very likely to be a thing to run out and turn into a fashion pitfall.

What’s your opinion? Do you like skinnies? Did you start going for “new” jeans shapes like boyfriend, “mom” jeans (you know the classic straight high waist) or even flared?
