The Chanel Salzburg show came to a close and a day of constant instagram feed refreshments is finally over. The backdrop for the incredible Métiers d’Art collection, Chanels annual pre-fall show in honour of the craftsmanship of its ateliers, was an array of beautiful Rococo salons at Schloss Leopoldskorn near Salzburg. Paying tribute to Austria’s rich heritage in sweet treat a huge table artfully decorated with everything from Christmas cookies and Gugelhupf to Mozart Kugeln adorned one of the rooms. However, lets not get distracted by the incredible setting! What about the fashion?

The Chanel Salzburg show continued the trend towards country themed Métiers d’Art collections that started with the 2013 Paris Edinburgh show at Linlithgow castle in Scotland. Surely this more “rustic” version of Chanel might not please everyone. However, as Kristen Stewart pointed out during an interview after last years Dallas show, these pieces have a certain patina and vintage appeal thus making it easier to combine them in more casual ways with denim and a t-shirt.

That said the show was both typical Chanel and typical Lagerfeld in a good way. There were plenty of incredible classic pocket jackets ranging from the most simple to the most elaborate styles. Fingerless gloves or mittens were worn with several looks and short A-line skirts almost referenced Japanese pop-culture thus pointing towards Lagerfeld’s collaborations with Shu Uemura.

Strong influences of the fashion at times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy as well references to military uniforms were apparent in beautiful ruffled shirts, rich decorations, pants with contrasting side stripes as well as knee high boots.

Besides this royal spirit the show was heavily influenced by Austrian traditional dressing. Feathers and chamois beards decorated hats, traditional leather shorts were worn with high stockings, knickerbockers were paired with knee high boots, Edelweiss buttons and embroidery popped up everywhere, “Haferl” shoes were present and pins with brezel, cable car or even bier mug shapes looked ready to be attached to a hiking stick!

With this new collection Lagerfeld tried to catch our attention with several styles from previous shows, which hit put in a surprising new context. Some of my favorites included the knee high Sorel style combat boots, which were surely a gentle reminder of fall 2014 sneaker boots.
Messenger bags inspired by Chanel jackets were presented for spring 2015, the Boulevard themed show. With the Salzburg show Lagerfeld continues to push the messenger bag forward, pic style.com
The messenger bag was started for couture fall 2014 and was one of the key elements of the Boulevard Chanel spring 2015 collection. This time around there were plenty of cross body bags. One very cute style was reminiscent of traditional Austrian leather pants!
As always with a Chanel show and in particular a Métiers d’Art its not possible to judge all these incredible details, the fabrics and colors by simply looking at runway pictures. So I am really looking forward when the runway video arrives on chanel.com. Afterwards I am going to provide some more detailed informations here on the blog.
