No scented candles please…!?

10 days until mothers day – Don’t forget its approaching super fast! A scented candle, particularly a new limited edition – Doesn’t that seem like the ideal present for your mom? Well I thought the same way until I received a little witty birthday invite from a friend some time ago. It read “…PS: Scened candles are not allowed to the party!”. First it made me angry and second it made me think for a while. It was true I had presented her with a Diptyque oriental candle for Christmas, an Astier De Villatte Cabourg candle from Paris, a Memo Marrakech Kiss from Rome, a Jo Malone Peony and blush suede for birthday and on it goes? I loved them all but purchased them for her, because I knew that she is so much more fragrance addicted than me. So what  was her problem?

Is there anything more beautiful than a perfectly smelling home? photo@http://erikabrechtel.com/2012/03/28/more-from-the-glitter-guide/

As she is known to love fragrances and scents I wasn’t the only one who chose the candles as presents. Over the course of just one year she acquired about 30 something scented candles and empty candle glasses (mainly the Jo Malone style). What to do with all those glasses after you already have one for your eye pencils, makeup brushes, cotton pads, bobby pins, one for small flowers, on your desk for paper clips and co – Throw them away? Of course its a little like with perfume bottles – you buy a beautiful one – after its empty you keep it for a while but in the end one day you have to throw it away.

So why not search for refillable home fragrance alternatives instead? Option number 1 are refillable room sprays.

LeLabo offers the refill service not only for its body fragrances but also for the full range of room sprays. You can benefit from a simple, industrial style bottle, which is quite decorative on a cupboard. After its empty you simply bring it to a LeLabo store and get a refill!

Option 2 – A diffuser. Diptyque has a fabulous refillable diffuser portfolio. Their hourglass shape is great. You start a diffusion process by turning the hour glass once. Its available for $150 @diptyque.com, which is pricy. After the diffuser doesn’t emit a scent anymore you can buy a refill for $50, which is $10 below the price of a standard candle. After only 9 refills your diffuser systems starts to pay back.  Another advantage of this system is that you have now problems with the wick and the open fire, which is particularly good when having small children.

Of course you have a reduced choice of scents compared with the traditional scented candles, but from a rationale point of view refillables are likely to be the better purchase!

What’s your opinion? Are you still into purchasing the new limited edition candles or did you start to raise some concerns about them and become a more selective scented candle buyer?
